Overview

Lack of information about environment condition in Chile asks for a tool that individuals or organisation may use to track the pollution level and claim against industrial companies in case the damage is caused.

The aim of this project was to propose solution where environmental data collection will be accessible and affordable. Based on performed user research and the current state of sensing technology, the solution proposes a workflow for implementing an IoT device into the digital infrastructure together with supportive functionalities to use collected information.

🎯 Problem definition

Due to the lack of public environmental information, authorities in Chile are not able to determine who exactly is causing the toxic events. Interventions of NGOs are pushing authorities to audit companies in a more strict way and adapt the public policies to prevent harmful events. However, due to the lack of resources and tools to track the condition of the environment to provide data based evidence, the process is not always successful.

Approach

🗣️ Understanding the user

How do different groups of people associated with pollution understand the problem?

User research targeted three different groups associated with pollution: NGOs, Ministry of Environment in Chile and citizens. Initially, interviews and inquires were performed to understand the context of the given problem from various perspectives.

Subsequently, previously interviewed participants and citizens were engaged in filling out the questionnaire where they were asked to ideate on barriers, options, needs and value of platform where the environmental data can be collected.
